Website Platform Migration Checklist for Small Businesses
What to protect when moving website builders: domains, URLs, content, forms, analytics, email and redirects.
A website migration is not just copying text into a new design. The dangerous parts are often the invisible connections around the site.
Inventory the existing site
List important pages, URLs, forms, downloads, integrations and any pages already receiving search traffic. This prevents useful content disappearing during the rebuild.
Keep control of the domain
Know where the domain is registered and who can change its DNS. A website platform and a domain registration are related but separate pieces of infrastructure.
Plan redirects
If page URLs change, redirect important old addresses to the most relevant new pages. Sending everything to the homepage is less useful to visitors and search engines.
Test forms and email
A beautiful new site that silently loses enquiries is a failed migration. Submit every important form and confirm where messages arrive.
Keep exports and backups
Save copies of content, images and any exportable customer or order data before switching. Do not cancel the old platform until the new site has been checked on the live domain.
